Will Robert Pattinson ever catch a break?

Fans of the Twilight alum are probably well acquainted with his long list of awkward but amusing moments: having a stalker disown him because she thought he was "boring," making up a story about a clown exploding during a nationally televised appearance, blowing up his own microwave while trying to invent a new form of pasta (no, Rob, aluminum does not belong in microwaves).

Now, Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first film in the Twilight franchise, is providing new material for that list. Speaking on the Spotify podcast The Big Hit Show, Hardwicke spilled new details on Pattinson's audition with Kristen Stewart—including a tumble he took while kissing his future costar.

"He walked in, his hair was dyed black for some play with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape. His shirt was just all messy, and I'm like, 'Ehh, OK,'" she said, per Entertainment Tonight. "Rob and Kristen auditioned on my bed, the kissing scene, and Rob was so into it, he fell off the bed. I'm like, 'Dude, calm down.' I'm in there filming with my little video camera. And at the end, Kristen was like, 'It has to be Rob!'"

Hardwicke also expressed concern about the duo's palpable chemistry.

"I could tell they had a lot of chemistry," she recalled. "And I thought, 'Oh my god, Kristen was 17, I don't want to get in some illegal thing.' So I remember I told Rob, 'By the way, Kristen is 17. In our country, it's illegal for them to have sexual relations.' And he's like, 'Oh, OK, whatever.'"

In an interview with The New Yorker last year, Stewart echoed Hardwicke's sentiments about casting Pattinson as Edward Cullen.

"It was so clear who worked," the Spencer actress said of her former costar, whom she dated for three years before the two split in 2013. She added that Pattinson had a certain "intellectual approach that was combined with 'I don't give a fuck about this, but I'm going to make this sing.' And I was, like, 'Ugh, same.' And, whatever, we were young and stupid and, not to say that we made it so much better, but that's what it needed, and that's what anybody playing those parts needed to feel."
