Ahead of the release of his highly anticipated Netflix documentary Robbie Williams, Robbie Williams has explained why he ended his relationship with Geri Halliwell in the early 2000s.

Robbie's Netflix documentary, which drops on 8th November, is expected to chart Robbie's early success as a teenager performing in Take That, look into the impact of fame on his mental health and touch on his relationships over the years including his engagement to All Saints' Nicole Appleton and marriage to wife Ayda Field, whom he has been married to since 2010.

One of his earlier relationships was with Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, whom he dated in the early 2000s and has now for the first time has explained why the couple broke up. Here's everything you need to know about when the couple dated and why they broke up.

When did Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell date?

Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell began dating in 2000, when they were both performing as solo artists, after Robbie left Take That in the mid 90s and Geri left the Spice Girls in 1998.

During his new documentary Robbie explained the pair began dating whilst he was going to Alcoholics Anonymous, as reported by the Mail Online, and he said he was warned about starting a relationship with anyone during that time.

The couple went on holiday together to the south of France with Robbie's songwriting partner Guy Chambers and his wife Emma, and footage from that trip is expected to be featured in the new documentary.

Robbie reportedly said he found spending time with Geri "very easy" in the documentary, adding: "I just found her company very very easy. There was a silliness. We really got on really well. It was fun."

It's been widely rumoured Robbie's song 'Eternity' was inspired by Geri and in the documentary Robbie's personal footage is said to show Geri was indeed the inspiration for the song.

Geri previously spoke about their relationship on Piers Morgan's Life Stories in 2010, explaining how Robbie helped her with her bulimia and that she would always be grateful to him.

She also touched on how the pair understood each other after leaving the Spice Girls and Take That.

"It was a very poignant friendship. I was lonely and felt he was the only person on the planet who could understand me because of his experiences with Take That," she said at the time. "We understood each other. But I didn’t really go out with him. I am happy and healthy now."

Why did Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell break up?

Robbie and Geri are believed to have ended their relationship after a few months together and now Robbie has revealed the reason he ended their relationship in the new documentary.

During their relationship the pair were constantly followed by the paparazzi and Robbie was incorrectly told it was Geri who had been tipping off the photographers and so he ended their relationship.

According to the Metro, Robbie said in the documentary: "Wherever we went, the paparazzi were there before we got there. These very private personal moments became public property and we were just dumbfounded how this could be happening.

"I bumped into a guy who’s a paparazzi and he told me it was Geri doing it. Now I don’t think that’s true for one second but at the time I did believe it.

"It just goes to show what being in the spotlight can do to your psyche when you can’t trust anybody and it ruined in some way the memory of such an important part of my life and such a joyous occasion."

Robbie previously told a story while on the Graham Norton about the level of paparazzi attention lead him to smuggle Geri Halliwell out of his flat by putting her in the boot of a car in a duffle bag.
