“Riverdale” Season 3 Cliffhanger Happened Because Cole Sprouse Was Cold

More proof Jughead is alive?!

The Riverdale season four premiere is almost here which means two things. First, it's senior year for our favorite Riverdale teens and that'll mean big things are going down. Second, we'll finally get some answers about where Jughead was during the season three finale that left us sweating all summer about his whereabouts.

To recap: at the end of season three, we flash forward to spring break with Betty, Archie, and Veronica all agreeing never to speak of something they did (what happened though?!) and burning their clothes in a big fire in the middle of the woods; they even agree to burn Jughead's beanie. Jughead, however, was conspicuously missing, leading all Riverdale fans to wonder what happened to him between the happier times at the end of season 3 and this ominous senior year Spring Break bloodbath.

But as BuzzFeed recently uncovered, in a group interview with his Riverdale co-stars for TVLine at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, KJ Apa revealed why Cole Sprouse wasn't in that final cliffhanger of a scene. Simply put, our guy was cold.

"The only reason why that [scene] happened is 'cause Cole was cold that night," he told TVLine, going on to reveal the original ending: "It was just all of us standing around a fire. We threw our clothes in."

To this, co-star Lili Reinhart added, "It was scripted all four of us and he was like, 'I don't wanna do it,' so he didn't."

At this point, Camila Mendes chimed in, assuaging any worries that Cole was ruining plans for the episode and revealing that not having Jughead in the final scene was previously discussed behind-the-scenes. "I think they [writers] had the idea," she explained, "like they wanted to play with that idea in season four, so then Cole being cold was just like the final straw."

So, basically, Jughead will be alive when season four begins, although you probably guessed thanks to the new season's trailer. Nonetheless, we know something dire is coming to Riverdale that is going to lead to Betty, Archie, Veronica, and Jughead getting into such a terrible mess it could lead to Jughead's disappearance and the core gang splitting up forever. Nervous? Because I sure am.

Riverdale season four premieres on The CW on Wednesday, October 9.
