Ritu Arya Is About to Become a Fan Favorite on 'The Umbrella Academy'

From Men's Health

The second season of The Umbrella Academy just dropped on Netflix, and fans are already binging to find out what happens to the Hargreeves siblings as they try to prevent another apocalyptic disaster from occurring. Only this time, they’re trying to change a series of events surrounding the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy.

In the first episode of the season, viewers find Diego dressed in white and residing in a mental institution, where he’s unwillingly sitting in group therapy with some other disinterested participants. One does stand out though—a mysterious yet eccentric young woman named Lila Pitts, who has her own agenda and wants out just as much as Diego, if not more. Is she a love interest? Does she know something the Hargreeves family doesn't? Whatever your thoughts on her are, Lila—and Ritu Arya, the actress who plays her—is about to become a fan favorite.

While she might not be familiar necessarily to mainstream TV-goers, Arya does come with an impressive resume, and she might've just popped up on a show or two you've seen before—or at least scrolled past on your Netflix menu. But before you get too far in your binging, here's what you need to know about the show's newest star:

She holds a very interesting college degree.

Before she started her career, the British-born actress attended Southampton University, according to her bio on IMDB. Unlike most actors, who often major in some sort of literature or media, Arya holds a Bachelor's Degree in Astrophysics… perfect for a woman starring on a show that features supernatural abilities, and characters frequently moving between space and time.

She has a pretty impressive resume.

The Umbrella Academy isn’t Arya's first go-around on an exceedingly popular TV series. According to her official IMDB page, sci-fi/niche television viewers might’ve seen her pop up on a couple of their favorite cult shows, such as Feel Good, Doctor Who and Sherlock. Romantic comedy fans may have seen her in last year's Last Christmas, alongside Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. Oh, and she was filming Red Notice with Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson before the pandemic shut production down. Talk about star power.

Her character will have a major role in Diego’s storyline.

When Deadline announced her appearance as Lila Pitts in the show’s second season, the publication called her character as “a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires.” They also describe her character’s personality to be “unpredictable, mischievous and sarcastic”—perfect, given the little gems of humor strewn throughout the show.

It also looks like Arya’s character has the potential to be influential to Diego Hargreeves’ (David Castañeda) story arc. In the official trailer released earlier this month, Lila and Diego appeared to be stuck together in an institution , but eventually escape and flee the scene in a car—while bickering, no less. Is she a new love interest?

She's repping her new gig—hard.

Although Arya's not necessarily the type to post to her social media accounts on a daily basis, it's clear how excited she is for her new gig on Umbrella Academy, as she keeps posting clips and photos from behind the scenes of the hit series.
