Spoilers ahead for season one of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Prime Video has already guaranteed five seasons of The Rings of Power. The J.R.R. Tolkien estate only let Prime purchase the rights to adapt the prequel to Lord of the Rings if they committed to doing five seasons (or 50 hours). "There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until season five. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be," co-showrunner J.D. Payne said. So, with that said, season two is already guaranteed.

Here's everything we know about the second chapter of the most expensive television show ever made, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

A new character, Círdan, is joining the ensemble.

No casting has been announced yet, but Círdan is described as the oldest and wisest of the elves. The entire main cast of Rings of Power is expected to return.

In March 2023, it was announced Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, and Tanya Moodie joined the cast in recurring roles, but no character names or descriptions were shared.

Other recurring new cast members include Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Nicholas Woodeson, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Kevin Eldon, Will Keen, Selina Lo and Calam Lynch.

The second season will mainly be filmed in the UK.

The first season shot in New Zealand during the pandemic, but season two production will center on the UK—where Prime Video "is establishing a multishow hub," per the Hollywood Reporter. Production began in early October 2022. Variety reported that the SAG-AFTRA strike will not impact the show, as it wrapped "a few weeks ago," so sometime in June 2023.

Season one focused on Galadriel's story, and now season two will center on Sauron.

The season one finale revealed Halbrand was Sauron. "I hope after the last episode airs, viewers watch the whole season again, which is now a different experience," co-showrunner Patrick McKay said. "We hope that, as we get into season two, it makes people like season one even better because you’re seeing it through a new prism."

"Sauron can now just be Sauron," McKay continued. "Like Tony Soprano or Walter White. He’s evil, but complexly evil. We felt like if we did that in season one, he’d overshadow everything else. So the first season is like Batman Begins, and the The Dark Knight is the next movie, with Sauron maneuvering out in the open. We’re really excited. Season two has a canonical story. There may well be viewers who are like, ‘This is the story we were hoping to get in season one!’ In season two, we’re giving it to them."

No premiere date has been set yet.

"The production team is working on season two," Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios said. "We’re going to get that out into the world as soon as we can. We want the shortest time possible between seasons, but we want to keep the bar just as high. So it’ll take what it takes. But there’s been some urgency around moving quickly, which is why these guys have been writing all through their hiatus. We’re moving fast."

There's a good chance we can see season two in 2024. While we wait, catch up on all of season one on Prime Video.
