Report: White Sox, Yoán Moncada agree to 5-year extension
The Chicago White Sox and third baseman Yoán Moncada have agreed to a five-year contract extension, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.
The deal would reportedly guarantee $70 million with a team option that could bring the total to $90 million.
The 24-year-old has played three seasons with the White Sox after coming to the South Side from the Boston Red Sox as the crown jewel in the Chris Sale trade. In 132 games last season, Moncada slashed .315/.367/.548 with 25 home runs, 79 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
Another White Sox deal
The extension is the latest high-profile transaction for the White Sox, who signed outfielder and top prospect Luis Robert to a six-year, $50 million extension in January.
The team has also reached deals this offseason with catcher Yasmani Grandal, pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Gio González and first baseman Edwin Encarnación, in addition to retaining longtime first baseman/designated hitter José Abreu.
Moncada’s deal comes on the heels of the Milwaukee Brewers’ high-profile extension with 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich, who is expected to sign a deal worth more than $200 million.
