Report: Sean Payton, Saints agree to 5-year extension

The second-longest tenured head coach in the NFL likely won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday morning that Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints have agreed on a five-year extension that will keep him in the Crescent City through 2024.

Payton was first hired by New Orleans in 2006, and he and quarterback Drew Brees, who was signed by the Saints a couple of months after Payton’s arrival, have turned around a once-moribund franchise.

In their first season together, Payton and Brees took the Saints from a 3-13 record in 2005 to 10-6 and a division title in ‘06.

All told, the Saints made the playoffs seven times in Payton’s 12 full seasons, advancing to the NFC championship game three times and winning the Super Bowl to close out the 2009 season.

New Orleans is 119-74 (.617) during Payton’s tenure. He is the winningest coach in franchise history.
