Report: Saquon Barkley to get second opinion on injured ankle

The New York Giants and scores of fantasy football players all had the same reaction on Sunday afternoon when running back Saquon Barkley limped off the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first half.

It went something like this: “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”

(Well, the PG version did.)

Barkley has a high-ankle sprain in his right ankle, and will be out for over a month if not two.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Tuesday that Barkley had seen Dr. Martin O’Malley, a Giants’ consultant who specializes in the ankle, on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery and underwent an MRI and an exam.

Further, Mortensen reported, Barkley is scheduled to see Dr. Robert Anderson, a renowned foot and ankle specialist, on Wednesday. Anderson joined the Packers’ medical team two years ago and is part of a sports medicine and orthopedics practice adjacent to Lambeau Field.

Tom Rock of Newsday reported that the Giants are not expecting Anderson to offer a different diagnosis than O’Malley. However, there’s no harm for the team or Barkley in getting a second opinion and possibly different approaches to treatment.
