The fashion world is mourning the loss of an icon this morning.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that the prolific designer Karl Lagerfeld had passed away at the age of 85 in Paris. The German-born Lagerfeld was most known for his work as creative director of Chanel and Fendi.

Reports now reveal that the legendary creative had passed away after a bout with pancreatic cancer. It is not known when Lagerfeld was diagnosed.

"He hadn't gone on about his illness, but battled it very bravely," said one source to The Mirror. "Karl was very proud of his fitness and healthy living, so the pancreatic cancer came as a huge shock." According to the publication, his state had been "a cause of concern for a number of weeks."

While initial reports on the creative's health had been kept under wraps, a particular moment at one of Chanel's most recent shows left fans and the fashion industry concerned. Lagerfeld did not take his traditional final bow at January 22nd's show in Paris, instead sending Virginie Viard (who will now succeed him) in his place.

“For the traditional greeting at the end of the show, Mr. Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him and greet the guests alongside the bride,” Chanel said in a statement, according to WWD.

Lagerfeld was scheduled to appear at the second runway show held just two hours later, but was not seen.
