Report: Dodgers give Max Muncy $26M contract extension

The Los Angeles Dodgers are busy this week. Days after agreeing to a deal that, once completed, will bring Mookie Betts and David Price to L.A., the Dodgers have now locked up one of their breakout stars of the past two years.

Max Muncy is getting a three-year extension worth $26 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deal brings cost assurance for the Dodgers on Muncy’s arbitration years and would eat up his first year of free agency if a fourth-year option is picked up.

Muncy, 29, has flourished since joining the Dodgers in 2017. He was originally drafted by the A’s, but released after two largely unproductive years. The Dodgers signed him and sent him to Triple-A in 2017. He was back in the big leagues in 2018, when he was a surprise star for L.A.’s World Series team.

Muncy has hit 70 total homers the past two seasons, playing a variety of positions for the Dodgers. He was an All-Star in 2019 and received MVP votes in each of the past two seasons. In the Dodgers’ current alignment, Muncy is expected to be the team’s everyday first baseman in 2020.
