Report: Bashaud Breeland faced 4-game suspension from NFL prior to Tuesday's arrest
Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland was arrested on Tuesday in South Carolina on marijuana and alcohol charges.
On Wednesday news broke that he was reportedly already facing a four-game ban from the NFL for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. What prompted that suspension is unclear, but NFL Network reports that Breeland is appealing the ban.
Tuesday’s arrest isn’t likely to help his cause.
Breeland is reportedly facing multiple misdemeanor charges that consist of resisting arrest, the transport of alcohol in motor vehicle with a broken seal, open container of beer or wine in motor vehicle, possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana or 10 grams of hash and driving without a license.
Gun used in marijuana arrest
According to a police report obtained by TMZ, a York County Sheriff’s deputy says that he saw Breeland and another man smoke marijuana at a gas station just south of Charlotte. He claims that when he approached them, they tried to hide the marijuana and Breeland repeatedly attempted to flee the scene.
The officer claimed that he pulled his taser and his gun on Breeland to detain him before eventually getting him into handcuffs.
Officers then searched his car and claimed to have found “a large marijuana blunt" containing 3.2 grams of marijuana along with open containers of beer and tequila, according to the report.
They claim that Breeland described himself as a “marijuana enthusiast.”
Breeland was released on Tuesday on $2,362 bond.
Attorney investigating ‘level of force’
Breeland’s attorney’s released a statement on Wednesday to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.
“At the time of his encounter with law enforcement, Mr. Breeland was leaving a gas station store after making a lawful purchase. Moments after returning to his vehicle, a 2020 Range Rover with temporary paper tags, law enforcement officers approached Mr. Breeland and drew their weapons.
“We look forward to investigating why this level of force was necessary. Bashaud Breeland is innocent until proven guilty. We look forward to the truth coming forward.”
Breeland played in all 16 regular-season games and started 15 after signing with the Chiefs last season. The six-year NFL veteran caught an interception in Kansas City’s Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason to remain with Kansas City.
