Report: Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer to meet with Suns about head coach job
The Atlanta Hawks have given coach Mike Budenholzer permission to meet with the Phoenix Suns about their open head-coaching job, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Friday afternoon.
Budenholzer, who has two years and more than $14 million left on his contract with the Hawks, is expected to meet with the Suns next week.
The Suns fired coach Earl Watson just three games into the 2017-18 season, promoting Jay Triano as their interim head coach through the rest of the season. Phoenix ended the season with a league-worst 21-61 record.
Budenholzer was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Popovich for 17 seasons before taking the head Atlanta job in 2013.
Budenholzer, an Arizona native, led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015, and was named the NBA Coach of the Year that season. The Hawks finished this season with a 24-58 record, the worst in the Eastern Conference.
