Remember Bird Box? Its sequel has an official release date

2018 ended on a high thanks to Netflix’s Bird Box, which came out on 13th December. The world went wild for the Netflix original, starring Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson (some quite literally went wild…), and people have been praying for a sequel ever since. But could there be one on the cards for this post-apocalyptic thriller? Well, yes actually.

Bird Box is based on Josh Malerman’s book of the same name, and back in March 2019, he announced that he was writing a sequel (!!), because of the success of the Netflix show. The novel, titled Malorie, takes place eight years after the original story. Sadly, the new Netflix film won't actually be a direct sequel to the original, instead pitching itself as a spin-off based in the same world.

What will happen in Bird Box 2?

As mentioned, the Spanish movie won't actually be a direct sequel to Sandra Bullock's original film, instead acting as a spin-off. The official title is Bird Box Barcelona, and follows a father-daughter duo named Sebastian and Anna who team up with a group of survivors in search of safety.

And, because nothing is ever simple, they soon face an even more sinister threat, as if the original deadly monsters weren't enough of a problem.

Who will star in Bird Box 2?

Mario Casas from The Paramedic will star in the lead role as Sebastian alongside Georgina Campbell as his daughter. They are joined by Diego Calva (Babylon), Alejandra Howard, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, Patrick Criado, Naila Schuberth, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Lola Dueñas and Celia Freijeiro.

What is Bird Box 2's release date?

Bird Box Barcelona will be released on the 14th July 2023.

What about a sequel to Malorie from Bird Box's story?

Sadly a direct sequel to the 2018 film starring Sandra Bullock is yet to be announced, though author Josh Malerman previously revealed he was working on a sequel to the original book titled Malorie. The book came out in 2020.

"The Bird Box world is Malorie's story, and I wanted to know more about her," he said at the time. "I wanted to get to know her even better. At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said: 'I want to know what happens next!' And she's like: 'Well, you know, you could make that happen', so it really was this warm feeling."
