As the new year begins, we’re all looking forward to what lies ahead. On Jan. 2, the actress announced her first book club pick of the year: First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston.

“Happy New Year everybody!” Witherspoon said in her announcement on Instagram. “I have the greatest book to share with you. It is our 91st Reese’s Book Club Pick, can you believe it?”
“This book tells the story of Evie Porter, who seems to have everything a girl could want in life,” she continued. “She has a perfect, doting boyfriend, she has a house with a picket fence and a fancy group of friends.”
But, despite appearances, Evie is living a “total double life.” “She uses an alias and her job is to infiltrate people’s lives and execute takedowns whenever her boss, the mysterious Mr. Smith, says to,” Witherspoon explained. “She has to stay one step ahead of her past to make sure she will have a future in front of her.”
“It’s such a fun read, there’s so many twists and turns and I just couldn’t put it down,” Witherspoon then gushed.
In the caption, Witherspoon continued her many compliments about the thriller.
“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through,” The Morning Show star wrote, adding that she “did NOT expect that ending…”

Also announcing the pick was the author herself, who questioned the consequences of having a “morally gray” character as her lead in the novel. “What if I made the main character morally gray? What if there was a little bit of truth in every lie she told?” Elston, who also wrote 10 Truths and a Dare, said. “I loved the endless possibilities that every “what if” brought.”
“For me, a good plot twist is what makes a great thriller and I wanted to make this new idea as twisty as I could; a roller coaster ride that was both nerve-wracking and thrilling,” Elston continued. We can’t wait to read it!
