Reese Witherspoon Shared Her New Year’s Goals and Ina Garten Had the Best Response

Every January we set out to make a list of goals to achieve in the new year. But when actress Reese Witherspoon took to Instagram to share some of her new habits she hopes to incorporate into 2022 and ask followers to share their own, Food Network star Ina Garten (known as the Barefoot Contessa) had a hilarious, relatable response.

In a short video Witherspoon posted to her Instagram page, she sat outside with her black labrador, Major, before they went for their daily walk. The actress shared her thoughts on healthy habits in the new year and changes she plans to make in the coming months, inspired by a recent book she read.

“My friend sent me this book called Atomic Habits and it was really interesting because it’s really about how the habits that you do every single day really can change your life,” Witherspoon said in the video. “So, if you’re doing something that’s one percent better for you every single day, you’re going to get one percent better every day. If you’re doing something that’s one percent worse for you every single day, you’re going to get worse every day.”

The actress then shared her four 2022 goals with her followers. “Let’s talk about habits! Are there any that have improved your daily life? Here are some I’m working towards,” she captioned the video. “1. Start the day with a big glass of water. 2. Get 10 minutes of outdoor light. @Hubermanlab recommends morning light. 3. Spend 30 - 60 minutes reading without distraction every day. 4. In bed by 10 pm. *No late-night TV binges. Try to get eight hours of rest!”

Fans popped into the comments, saying they’re looking forward to being more grateful, reading more books, getting outside in the morning, and more during the new year. Though these habit changes sound like some great, healthy choices to make, Garten poked fun at Witherspoon, commenting to offer up her own four-step plan to make 2022 the best year yet.

“To quote @reesewitherspoon–that sounds great, but I’m probably not doing any of those things! LOL!! My formula is easier to follow,” she wrote in the comments. “1. Drink more large cosmos. 2. Stay up late watching addictive streaming series. 3. Stay in bed in the morning playing Sudoku instead of reading a good book. 4. Spend more time (safely) with people you love. In a pandemic, I do what I can,” she wrote.

We’re not at all surprised about the two ladies’ differing opinions on New Year’s resolutions—and we see ourselves in both of them (celebs, they’re just like us!).

After all, Garten has shared countless recipes for large-scale drinks to enjoy, like her summer Sangria for July fourth weekend, and Witherspoon is largely known for her love of books through her Hello Sunshine book club. Though Garten’s comment was all in good fun, we can’t help but laugh and appreciate the different types of changes to make this year your very best.
