Like many people, I have always been into all types of music. My favorites include country, pop and rock, and I listen to them nonstop. I enjoy rock music because it tells a story of someone’s struggles we all can probably relate to at some point or another. The lyrics are compelling and emotional, which capture the listeners. Since I was 13, my favorite rock band has been Linkin Park.
I felt like Linkin Park could relate to how I was feeling at a time in my life where so much had changed. However, eventually I got more interested in country music and stopped listening to Linkin Park completely until last year. That was when it seemed like the reality of life came at me with full force. The stress of college, going through my first breakup and dealing with my mental illness was drastically affecting me. It felt like everything was going downhill.
I needed to find a new way to cope with my struggles since everything I once used as a coping mechanism wasn’t working. So, I decided to go on YouTube and listen to rock music. And that’s when I discovered Linkin Park all over again and started to listen to their music once more.
For the first time in a while, I felt like someone finally understood how I was feeling in regards to my emotional state at the time. I was finally able to feel free from all of my stress and worries about life. As soon as I put those headphones on and listened to the lyrics of “Breaking The Habit,” everything I was feeling at the time went away. I could finally express my true emotions instead of having to hide them behind a fake smile.
Every time I turn on Linkin Park, I’m able to escape from reality. Their music reminds me life has its ups and downs, but I don’t have to give up on myself just because I’m going through a tough time.
Every day, stress affects all of us. At the end of the day, we have to remember that the people who are singing those lyrics have gone through the same struggles and have had to overcome their own emotional issues, too. We’ve all been there.
There are times when we feel like our lives are falling apart, and for that, we need a release — something to help us understand we’re not alone. For me, that release is music and listening to Linkin Park’s lyrics. It’s important to remember all of these feelings are temporary and we’re going to win this battle.
At the end of the day, we all experience stress and devastating events in our lives at some point. However, Linkin Park’s music has always been my go-to in these situations. I’m so thankful I rediscovered their music in my time of need. Especially when I felt like my world was crashing down.
We all know that music can be therapeutic. So, if you also need a coping mechanism or you just want to feel less alone, give Linkin Park a listen. It may just make you feel better.
