A Reddit Thread Asking For The Most Iconic Meal In Every State Has More Than 24K Responses
Over the past three days, possibly one of the greatest food debates of all time has been quietly going down on Reddit. Forget those arguments over pineapple pizza and ketchup on hot dogs. That was trivial, minor league stuff. This highly contested debate asked just one very, very important question: "What recipe best represents your state?"
Provocateur u/emilou09 first posed the question on Monday within the thread r/Cooking, after sharing her self-imposed challenge to cook one meal per state.
Naturally, all hell broke loose because pretty much everybody and their mom had something to say. Now, more than 24,000 comments later, we've found the good, the bad, and the ugly. Without further ado, here are the dishes that stood out the most.
The Good: Louisiana
While some stated the obvious with dishes like gumbo and jambalaya, others claimed that rice and gravy, muffaletta (an Sicilian sandwich) and etouffee (a Creole shellfish stew over rice) were definitely the way to go. Given that these dishes are very Louisiana-specific, you out-of-staters are definitely going to have take a trip down to the Bayou state and check them out.
The Bad: North Dakota
Ok so TBH, North Dakotans have an...interesting palate. Out of the thousands of comments, they all seemed to agree on one particular dish: Knoephla.
What is knoephla exactly? Well, it's a German soup made with dumplings, potatoes, celery and cream. Not going to lie seems to lack quite a lot of color (and possibly flavor),but people are in love with the stuff. To each their own, I guess.

The Ugly: New York
So most of you probably are assuming that New York's most iconic food must be a chewy bagel or a greasy slice of pizza. Hate to break it to you, but those eats are quite literally for the birds...and city folk. When it comes to the rest of the state, it's all about the garbage plate. And yes, it looks exactly like how it sounds.

Originating from Rochester, NY, this combination of leftover cheeseburger, sausage, and chicken, topped with macaroni salad, baked beans, and fries is quite terrifying. If you're not a New Yorker, we suggest that you just leave it alone. Seriously.
That being said, people still fought pretty damn hard for the New York slice.
...At the end of the day, we should just all keep in mind that New Yorkers will never ever agree on anything, right?
