Red Sox pitcher Carson Smith on DL with dislocated shoulder after throwing his glove in anger
On Monday, Boston Red Sox reliever Carson Smith gave up a late home home run to Khris Davis in a 6-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
When he got to the dugout, he threw his glove in frustration.
On Tuesday, the Red Sox placed Smith on the 10-day disabled list with a dislocated shoulder suffered while throwing his glove.
Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told the Boston Globe the 10-day timetable was optimistic.
“I’m not expecting him back in 10 days at this point,” Dombrowski said. “We’ll see how severe it ends up being, but it’s got the potential of being a major injury.”
Smith may end up needing surgery.

Smith told the Globe that he routinely throws his glove without consequence. You can even ask one of his teammates.
“You can ask [pitcher] Joe Kelly,” Smith said. “I throw my glove in warm-up every day playing catch with him. That’s part of my warm-up routine is I go through my throwing motion, I throw my glove — actually I usually hold on to it, sometimes I accidentally release it.”
He knew this time that something went wrong immediately.
“I felt my shoulder pop in and out real quick,” Smith said.
Smith has been one of the most active Red Sox relievers with a 3.77 ERA over 14.1 innings through 18 appearances. The 28-year-old made just 11 appearances in the previous two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora chalked the injury up to one of those things.
“I’m disappointed just like him,” Cora told the Globe. “We talked about it last night, talked about it today. What can I say? People get frustrated. It’s a freak accident, let’s be honest. He’s not the first guy that slams a glove or throws a bat or punches himself. But it is what it is. We have to move on.”
