How to Recreate Awkwafina’s Shimmery Gold Eye Shadow

Last December, Chanel's pre-fall 2019 show was held in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The clothes reinterpreted ancient Egyptian fashion with signature Chanel style to create a sartorial pastiche. The golden shift dresses, tights, hats, makeup, and military-esque jackets felt like an ode not only to the artifacts that surrounded the runway show, but to the many film variations of Cleopatra. In a way, Chanel ushered in a new era of the Egyptian Reviva, weaving ancient Egyptian fashion into everyday trends.

Elizabeth Taylor famously wore her signature blue eye shadow when playing Cleopatra in the 1963 film, but gold eye shadow is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to add some Cleopatra prowess to your daily style. At the Chanel runway show, models wore gold and black eyeliner that outlined the eye rather than fill it in. It was a perfect art deco style makeup look, one that’s easy enough to achieve at home and will automatically send a look into a different era. A liquid eye shadow attached to a wand is the easiest way to replicate the Chanel makeup look, and practice makes perfect.

We consider gold a neutral, making it the perfect transitional shade to go from summer to fall. A gold eye shadow will match any outfit and imbue your makeup look with old Hollywood glam and luxury. Rapper and actor Awkwafina seems to agree, wearing the metallic shade to a rooftop party in Brooklyn a few days ago.

"I never want to make her look like everyone else in Hollywood," her makeup artist, Matin, told Vogue. "She lets me go with it!" To achieve the look, Matin added loose gold glitter to Mehron Mixing Liquid. The cat-eye shape gave it an extra cool (and very Elizabeth Taylor) vibe. To avoid going overboard, Matin used a soft blush and pink lip balm and rounded out Awkwafina’s stellar look.
