After Aladdin and The Lion King earlier this year, another classic animated Disney property is getting a live-action remake later this year. However, the cartoon in question and the circumstances behind the remake couldn’t be more different from those blockbusters. Instead of a feature film that grossed hundreds of millions of dollars, this remake is of a TV show that grossed just a tad less.
We’re talking about Recess, a cartoon series that debuted in 1997 as part of ABC’s Saturday morning cartoon block and, when it went into reruns, became a key part of the after school routine for many a latchkey kid. After 127 episodes and four movies, the show reached a cult classic status that explains the enthusiasm for a live-action reboot.
But Disney is busy with higher-profile fare, so a group of fans took things into their own hands. A non-profit collective of filmmakers from Vancouver is attempting to fund this film on Indiegogo — not exactly home to a ton of star-studded blockbusters. If funded, the already-shot film will be released for free on the internet, at least in part because trying to profit from the project sounds like an easy way to get sued.
The movie itself features young actors taking on the roles of the Recess gang, the Ashleys, and resident teacher’s pet Randall as high schoolers, well beyond their days at Third Street School. The filmmakers are calling it a “live-action, re-imagining of the gang in a high school setting tackling current issues like love, peer pressure, social media, identity, etc.”

If it’s able to attract enough funding and capture the camaraderie that made the original series so compelling, we’re definitely looking forward to checking this one out.
