Marie Kondo is who we turned to for advice on how to keep our homes clean and organized, but it turns out that since having kids, the queen of tidiness has let her home get a little messier (a feeling that most parents can probably relate to).

While promoting her latest book, Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life, the consultant made a shocking confession to fans: “My home is messy.”

As reported by The Washington Post, Kondo revealed that her priorities have changed since having children. “Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times,” she said. “I have kind of given up on that in a good way for me. Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home.”

She then said, “My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time, at this stage of my life.”

Kondo married Takumi Kawahara in 2012 and they are currently the parents to daughters Satsuki and Miko, as well as a son they welcomed in April 2021.

This different perspective on organization as a parent is part of what Kondo explores in her new book. And as MarketWatch notes, her new book is more about “decluttering your time,” and her site even says, “The true purpose of tidying is not to cut down on your possessions or declutter your space. The ultimate goal is to spark joy every day and lead a joyful life.”

We're in shock, but also, we'd love to see what Konmari *thinks* messiness looks like (because we'd guess it's probably still pretty organized).
