Can you really make ‘sushi’ out of Oreos?

Is TikTok’s “Oreo sushi” recipe really a good idea?

Allegedly, this viral food hack deconstructs the delicious snack cookies and turns them into rolls. And the best part: It only uses two ingredients.

The recipe comes from a popular food creator on TikTok, @cheeseordesserts. In his now-viral clip, the home chef creates photogenic “sushi” rolls out of nothing more than a roll of Oreos and some condensed milk.

TikTokers were extremely divided over the concept. Some thought Oreo sushi was unnecessary, while others were excited to try it themselves.

“It’s not sushi,” one user wrote.

“I would eat that,” another wrote.

“Oh, that looks so good,” another agreed.

So what’s the truth here? Clearly, the only way to find out was to test it ourselves — so that’s exactly what In The Know producer Poppy Shen did.

How to make ‘Oreo sushi’

In addition to the Oreos and 4 tablespoons of condensed milk, the only other supplies you’ll need for this recipe are a Ziploc bag, plastic wrap and a rolling pin.

To start, take apart your sleeve of Oreos, separating the creme from the cookies. Place them into two separate bowls.

Then add 3 tablespoons of condensed milk to your cookies. Stir, then place the mixture in a Ziploc bag before crushing and flattening it with a rolling pin. Next, add 1 tablespoon of condensed milk to your creme.

Finally, stretch the cookie mix out onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Spread your creme mix on top of that, leaving a little bit of room on each end. Use the plastic wrap to roll the sushi into a long log. Once it’s shaped to your liking, you can cut bite-sized “sushi” pieces out of the log.

This recipe sounds fairly simple, but Poppy found it to be harder than it seems. And while the result tastes good, it’s not much different than eating a plain old Oreo. Overall, this recipe is a little too difficult to be worthwhile.
