Is there really a way to make bacon out of bread?

A vegan food hack is blowing up on TikTok for claiming exactly that. The trick started with TikToker Rj THE Magician, who drew millions of views on his original recipe video.

But the idea sounds too good to be true. Bread and bacon are delicious already, so could they really come together in some bizarre, meatless way? To find out, we gathered some supplies and gave the recipe a try — thanks to this much-needed stainless steel roller.

How to make vegan bacon out of bread

The concept behind this recipe is essentially to flatten and fry bread into a bacon-y texture, then use seasoning to make it taste like meat. Here’s what you’ll need.

  • A loaf of sliced bread

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • ¼ cup maple syrup

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • A pinch of MSG

  • A few splashes of Tabasco-brand Chipotle Pepper Sauce

To start, flatten your bread slice with the roller. Then, cut each slice of bread into three or four strips and use the roller to flatten them again.

Next, make your marinade by mixing all the remaining ingredients in a bowl. Soak your bread strips in the marinade for about one minute. Meanwhile, heat a skillet to medium-low.

Cook your strips actively, flipping every few seconds until they’re crispy. Then, it’s time to eat!

Is ‘bread bacon’ really as good as meat?

Our ultimate goal for trying this recipe was to see if it could really replace bacon as part of a daily breakfast diet.

When it comes to cost, the answer is a resounding “yes.” The bread and supplies used in this recipe — most of which you probably already have — cost a lot less than good bacon.

As far as convenience goes, it’s sort of the opposite. The flattening and marinating add a level of effort that simply doesn’t exist with regular bacon.

That said, the taste is pretty worth it. It doesn’t taste like bacon, exactly — but there’s a savory, smoky taste that certainly feels right with breakfast. It’s not bacon (what can be?), but it’s a delicious alternative for vegans and vegetarians.
