Every time Adam Sandler has taken on an award-worthy, serious role, something has happened that has derailed his chance at an Oscar. This year, the star of the upcoming Uncut Gems has already been overshadowed by one of his costars. Not Idina Menzel or Kevin Garnett. No, the real star of Uncut Gems is the high-end, diamond and gold encrusted Furby (with or without the necklace chain).

This is Golden Diamond Furby’s time. Laying low since the Furby stampedes of 1998, it’s been over 20 years since Furby has had a major public appearance. And now, like Brendan Fraser or the McRib, it’s making a triumphant return to the public eye.

Though Golden Diamond Furby only makes a brief appearance as an oversized pendant that Adam Sandler is trying to show off to some patrons of his jewelry shop, his time on camera is dazzling and only a little haunting. In that brief trailer moment, Golden Diamond Furby shines (literally). Those menacing eyes and intricate stoning suggest that our childhood friend is not here to play. Though the film doesn’t come out until December, Furby has made its place clear.

Chatter about Golden Diamond Furby started as soon as the film was screened at TIFF earlier this year. Furby has made its move.

But then the revolution started. When the Uncut Gems trailer went live on Tuesday morning, the people knew who the Oscar-worthy performer was.

Oscars have been won with limited screen time, guys. Yes, this is Adam Sandler’s award season vehicle, but make no mistake. There is no shinier, sparklier, more expensive costar on the market this season than Uncut Gems supporting actor, Golden Diamond Furby. Put that in your trophy case, Meryl.
