Anyone who remembers the teen cult classic Bring It On will remember the East Compton Clovers, the team with bangin’ cheers, fresh moves, and enough fierceness to make even Beyoncé’s head spin. Now, in a case of life imitating art, a Bronx cheerleading squad finds itself in a similar bind that the Clovers did in the 2000 film.

According to WPIX 11, the Monroe High School Eagles cheerleading squad will be the first Bronx public high school to make it to February’s National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida. The problem? They need funds to help pay their way there.

There is a GoFundMe page to help raise the $30,000 it would take to transport the team to the competition and pay for hotel rooms, food, and other expenses needed for the Monroe team to slay the game.

Principal Emarilix Lopez mentioned that “some of the students have difficult lives outside of school.”

According to the GoFundMe page, “We come from a place where opportunities rarely come but we developed a community that supports each-others goals. Our cheerleaders stay after school 3-4 days a week for up to three hours a day. They are beyond dedicated and love to be apart of something that brings them so much joy. Our whole team also excels in academics, having at least a 85 average or better, apart of student council, national honor society and programs that give college credit in high school.”

The school is part of a community district where about 48.8 percent of total households make $34,999 or less in income and benefits a year according to the 2010-2014 ACS Profile, which is why it’s no wonder that a $30,000 price tag would be a burden for a public school in this area.

So if you’re one of those people who wished that you could have helped the Clovers get to Nationals all those years ago, now is your chance to make this Bring It On situation a reality for these Bronx cheerleaders. So far, they’ve raised just over half of what they need to make it to their goal. Something tells us they will have no problem achieving it!

We reached out to the school for comment and will update once we hear back.
