Get Ready: A 'Mamma Mia 3' Is Likely Going to Happen
Yesterday Judy Craymer, a producer behind the original stage production of Mamma Mia, told the Daily Mail that the movie franchise inspired by and built around the music of ABBA will likely, one day, feature a third movie.
Craymer said that she had planned to take time this spring to think about Mamma Mia 3, but, you know, pandemics are distracting.
"I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog," she said. "I think one day there will be another film, because this is meant to be a trilogy, you see." She added: "I know Universal would like me to do it" and said that she would want to add the four new songs that ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote for the virtual concert they've planned with fellow ABBA members Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
This is big news for someone who spent the entire summer of 2008 blasting the soundtrack and defending Meryl Streep's right to be in a musical to anyone who might utter a negative word. And trust me, no one else wants more ABBA.
But there is something that needs to be addressed here: Donna was dead in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018). We only got a little bit of Meryl Streep at the very end. She sang a very sad, slow song about being dead, and then poof! Gone. We did get Cher, as a treat (and what a treat it was!), but in this writer's opinion, the best part of Mamma Mia is getting to see Streep completely relax, let loose, and sing to ABBA in the sun.
If we get a third movie, I want to see, in writing, that we'll get Cher for beginning to end. After all, the woman released an entire album of ABBA covers. 2020 has been a real bummer. We deserve more Cher, especially if we can't have Meryl. Case closed.
