In a rare bit of good news, LeVar Burton, American actor, director, and author known by Gen-Xers and millennials for hosting Reading Rainbow for over 20 years, has announced he’ll resurrect a “version” of the popular kid’s reading show on Twitter. While the Reading Rainbow brand won’t be resurrected, Burton will be reading to a live audience, and soothing our souls in the process.

He’s also been reading classic short fiction and stories on his podcast, LeVar Burton Reads, and last week he read a story by Toni Morrison, so adults can tune in to his podcast at any time and peruse the delights he’s already delivered. But now, he’s taking his show live.

That’s right: Levar Burton, one of the most beloved actors of all time, is turning to Twitter live to soothe us in these trying times with his beautiful voice and some of our favorite books. But this time, Burton isn’t just reading to young kids. He’s reading to young adults and regular old adults three times a week on Twitter live. Just tune in to his Twitter at the time listed and enjoy.

Burton announced that he was trying to bring back the classic show in his own way and mentioned he was only able to look for stories in the public domain when Neil Gaiman — “American Gods” and “Sandman” author — said that Burton could use any story he’s ever written. Then, HarperStacks, the school library branch of HarperCollins, gave permission to Burton for online readings of any HarperCollins Children’s book titles through May 32 of this year. That means that adults, young adults, and the grown-ups among us will have plenty to enjoy from Burton’s weekly live streams.

Kid Time

Kids can tune in to LeVar Burton Reads on Mondays at 9 a.m. PST / 12 p.m. PST. He will be reading selections from HarperCollins Children’s book titles and hasn’t yet announced what will be on the docket for Monday, April 6th.

Young Adult Time

Young Adults readers – that’s teens aged 12 to 18 – can tune in to LeVar Burton Reads at 3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET on Wednesdays. His first reading will occur on Wednesday, April 8th, and he hasn’t yet announced what he’ll be reading to his live audience.

Adults Time

Adults are first up to benefit from Levar Burton’s new project. On Friday, April 3rd, Burton will be reading a selection from Neil Gaiman’s collected works — but what exactly he’ll be reading from the master storyteller is yet to be unveiled. Tune in at 6 p.m. PST / 9 p.m. EST.
