Ralph Macchio teases long-awaited 'Karate Kid' rematch in Season 2 of 'Cobra Kai'

Warning: Minor Cobra Kai (Season 1) spoilers below

It’s no surprise that Cobra Kai is returning for a second season. YouTube Premium’s Karate Kid reboot defied all expectations, racking up tens of millions of streams and registering a spotless 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s also been a nice boost to the profiles of stars Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and Martin Kove, who dropped some hints about the recently announced Season 2 this week when they stopped by Yahoo Studios.

“We also envisioned Season 1 being the setup — we had a nice cliffhanger reveal at the end of Season 1 which is John Kreese (Kove) character coming back into Johnny Lawrence’s life, and also in Season 2 what will be Daniel LaRusso’s life, and how that plays out,” Macchio told us (watch above). “There are so many places to go, it’s really exciting, especially having the experience of Season 1 and the response.”

Macchio said they’re planning to start production on Season 2 in the early fall, and while he wouldn’t cave on other canon cameos in the works (Elizabeth Shue? Hilary Swank? The “Get him a body bag! Yeaaaaah” guy?), he did indicate the now-middle-aged car salesman Daniel LaRusso could be engaging in more fisticuffs the second time around.

“Billy had a decent amount of [fighting] in Season 1, and who knows, maybe it’ll be my turn to carry some more [of the action],” he said. “June 15 is my start training day.”

So while Season 1 brought LaRusso, who hadn’t practiced karate in eight years, out of retirement, the next season could have a LaRusso-Lawrence rematch in store.

“I think in Season 2 he’s out to make sure the community is not contaminated by the Cobra Kais,” Macchio said. “So he’s gotta put his gloves on, if you will.”

Cobra Kai: Season 1 is now streaming on YouTube Premium.
