Raiders OT Donald Penn and wife deny any physical altercation happened in alleged dispute
Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Donald Penn and his wife reacted quickly after TMZ reported about a possible domestic violence incident between the two, releasing a statement that said no physical altercation happened.
TMZ reported Monday that Penn was a suspect in a domestic violence case in Los Angeles. The report said he “slapped his wife’s butt and then poured a drink on her head,” and also grabbed her wrist.
The couple put out a statement to multiple outlets saying there was no physical violence (h/t to Vic Tafur of The Athletic).
“There was a verbal disagreement, there was NO physical altercation,” the statement, released through a representative of the Penns, said. “The two are in the middle of a divorce and it is a hard time for both parties.”
Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that detectives are still investigating. It’s a complicated case when it comes to the NFL ramifications. The NFL has punished many other players involved in domestic violence cases, even if the player is eventually not found guilty of anything. Also, the Raiders supposedly have a zero tolerance policy on domestic violence.
The Raiders did draft two offensive tackles within in their first three picks, but Gehlken said authorities arrived at the Penn residence at 9 p.m. Sunday, well after the draft was finished. The drafting of two tackles was probably due to the fact Penn is 35 years old and staged a long holdout last summer.
