Is Rachel McAdams pregnant? A look at her secretive romantic history
Some big life changes are reportedly happening for Rachel McAdams this year. According to E! News, the actress is pregnant with her first child.
Neither McAdams nor her representatives have commented on the lone report — Yahoo reached out but did not receive a response — which should come as no surprise. The Game Night star is notoriously private about her personal life. She has been dating screenwriter Jamie Linden, and it’s implied in the article that he’s the father.
McAdams, 39, and the Dear John writer, 37, were first linked in spring 2016. They were photographed in Europe that May, but sightings of the pair have been scarce overall. They have never walked a red carpet together or made an official public appearance as a couple.
The Mean Girls star hasn’t even spoken out about her relationship with Linden — or many of her other exes, for that matter. Ever since her highly publicized romance with Ryan Gosling, the actress has been extra-reclusive about her love life. Even then, she was never an over-sharer in the romance department.
Gosling and McAdams met while filming The Notebook, but it wasn’t love at first sight for them. In fact, the movie’s director revealed that Gosling wanted to film with another actress at one point because of a lack of chemistry. Clearly, things changed.
The pair took their love offscreen and became one of pop culture’s most fawned-over couples, dating from 2005 to 2007, even briefly reuniting in 2008. They weren’t shy about showing PDA (cough, that MTV Movie Awards kiss) and didn’t completely hide from the paparazzi. Still, after Gosling and McAdams called it quits, she more carefully shielded that part of her life from the public. After they split the second time, she apparently rebounded with Josh Lucas.
Multiple outlets reported on the new coupling, but aside from photos that live forever on the internet, you’d never know they were together. The actress didn’t comment on the romance, which apparently fizzled out after a few months. However, she didn’t stay single for long. The Wedding Crasher star’s next serious relationship was with Michael Sheen.
Sheen and McAdams met in 2010 on the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris. They were photographed together after filming wrapped and eventually confirmed their romance without saying a thing. The couple made their debut walking the red carpet together at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. In a rare move, the actress actually spoke publicly about her relationship to the press at one point in their relationship.
“I don’t usually speak much about this kind of thing,” she acknowledged to the Telegraph. “Michael is a very funny person. … Michael and I didn’t get together while we were filming Midnight in Paris, which I feel strongly about not doing when I’m working. We became quite good friends, which I think is a great way to start.”
After more than two years together, the actors called it quits in 2013. “Rachel wants to settle down and is dreaming of having a family. Michael always seemed content with their relationship. Since he already has a daughter [Lily, 14, with Kate Beckinsale], he feels no need to have more children. He wants to focus on his career,” a source alleged to People at the time. “They still have some contact and are friendly. … They tried to work things out, but at the end they just couldn’t agree. It caused some frustration, and they thought it was better to go separate ways.”
That was the last we saw of McAdams and Sheen and the last we saw of the actress making red carpet appearances with any boyfriend.
In 2013, she was spotted around her hometown of Toronto with Canadian music manager Patrick Sambrook. They were photographed kissing the following year, but not much was known about their romance. Notice a trend here? By summer 2015, the actress acknowledged to Marie Claire that she was single, with the magazine noting that she and Sambrook had split “not long ago.”
Despite some unconfirmed (and likely false) romance rumors with her various co-stars, such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Kitsch, McAdams wasn’t known to date again until she was photographed with Linden nearly two years ago.
So — will we ever get a Kardashian-like confirmation from Rachel with all the pregnancy details? As much as we’re dying to know more about baby McAdams, we won’t hold our breath.
