R.L. Stine Reveals The Time He Went Too Far In Hilarious New Video

Cameron LeBlanc

The biggest takeaway from R.L. Stine‘s appearance on the Facebook Watch and PICTURESTART series “Letters To _____” is that he’s still freaking hilarious. At different points he refers to “starting something new, killing teenagers” in one of his books with an affectionate chuckle and calls being married to his editor “a nightmare,” which we sure hope is a joke.

But the best part of his appearance on the show, in which fans are surprised with the chance the ask questions of their favorite authors, is when he talks about the time he went too far.

“You really ride the line of creepy vs. scary. How do you tell?” Sawyer, one of the fans, asks Stine. “Do you ever write something and you’re like ‘Oh that’s too scary, that’s gonna freak them out forever’ or do you push yourself to be scarier?”

“Usually, the editors ask me to be scarier. I’m pretty conservative when it comes to kids,” he replied, apparently forgetting about the murdering teenagers joke he’d made minutes earlier.

“There was only one time in one book that I went too far, and it was a book where the librarian was a monster. At one point in the book, he ate a kid. Yeah, everyone thought maybe that was going too far. I don’t know, I liked it.”

We like it too! But while the change Stine made downgraded the scariness of the story, his rationale was way funnier.

“We changed it and I put a bowl of live turtles on his desk and every once in awhile he’d reach over and eat a live turtle, which is probably better than a kid because it’s crunchier, right?”

Throughout the episode, Stine is happy to make fun of himself. He specifically mentions books he’s written that he thinks are pretty bad and his efforts at writing for adults that no one bought. Still, he’s clearly very comfortable as a children’s author,” which probably isn’t hard considering how successful he’s been.

“The reason I can write for kids in this age group is that’s where I am. That’s my stage. I’m your basic junior high kid,” and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s the best audience. I love these kids. It’s the last time in their lives they’ll ever be enthusiastic.” For a guy who’s spent his life scaring people, he’s pretty damn good at making them laugh.
