Many people have only two weeks of vacation a year (for Americans it’s often less), so it’s extra-important to make the most of them. But with the existence of airplanes and all, there are seemingly infinite destination options with different experiences. So how do you choose where to spend your precious few days of travel and avoid the nightmare wrong vacation you have to force yourself to enjoy?
First, decide on a typeof vacation: Get back to nature, kick back on a resort, or explore a new city? At this stage, the options already overwhelm. This chart will help you decide what’s best for you when you’re looking for a new city to explore.
The selection of cities varies from the most popular tourist hubs to cities most Americans might not have thought of. Because who doesn’t want to get off the beaten path a bit? Play a few times and switch your answers around. It’s quick, easy, and a lot cheaper than airfare.
Based on your answers, you’ll be headed to…
New York City: In New York you can have whatever you want whenever you want. Load up on world-class museums, operas, and symphonies, or spend your days endlessly shopping. You want Ethiopian food for dinner and then to flamenco dance all night on a Tuesday? Not an issue.
Barcelona: In the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean you can have your beach and Gaudi too. Enjoy the fresh fish and vegetables of Catalonian cuisine. Then dance until the morning.
Rio: Rio de Janeiro may be a bit chaotic, but its dreamlike mountainous beach landscape will melt away your stress if you can’t sweat it out dancing samba all night while sipping Caipirinhas.
Mexico City: Mexico City is jam packed with galleries, museums, and public art. The food is incredible (and it’s not just tacos). Pepper fans delight in the arrays of salsas that come with meals. Cabs cost next to nothing. Boogy at night to salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, mariachi, or ranchero. This is a city where you truly get more for less.
Istanbul: The seat of a defunct empire, Istanbul mysteriously feels like both a city of the past and the future. Wake up to the call to prayer and tour gorgeous mosques during the day. Get scrubbed down in a traditional Turkish bathhouse. Then spend the night in an ultra-modern nightclub.
Ho Chi Minh City: Saigon is the perfect city for walking around, eating street food like pho and banh mi, and observing the bustling street life. Just be careful crossing! For nighttime fun, Saigon offers a huge array of beautiful rooftop lounges to take advantage of the warm weather.
London: In London you will find the pinnacle of posh, the chicest chic, and some of the best museums in the world. And for when you’re feeling like dabbling in the dark arts of lowbrow, you can always hit up a pub for fish and chips.
Dakar: Dakar will provide a novel cultural experience for most Americans. The furthest west point in Africa, the peninsula’s entire coastline is strikingly beautiful public beach. Dine on heavy grains, stews, and fresh fish. The art and live music scenes explode at the seams. Walk long enough and you’ll hear a drum. Follow it.
Paris: Spend endless days in the Louvre. Drink wine and nosh on fine cheese. Enjoy the gorgeous landscaped parks and ornate picturesque architecture. The world capital of elegance, the “City of Lights” really does dazzle.
