Since 2017, Ab and Al have poured sweat and tears into Queer Candle Co. — the queer couple-owned business that offers a variety of soy wax candles.
While founders Ab and Al focus on making non-toxic candles that will burn longer and cleaner than other options, their small but mighty business has a deeper goal. One of the main missions of Queer Candle Co. is to give back to the queer community by promoting visibility and amplifying the voices of trans women and nonbinary people of color.
Each month, Ab and Al donate 10% of Queer Candle Co.’s monthly earnings to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which is a New York City-based grassroots organization that “works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.”
It’s this mission that makes Queer Candle Co. a business to support now and always. And Queer Candle Co.’s donations are giving shoppers like you a chance to not only support a queer business but also the broader LGBTQIA+ community.
“Our whole business, starting from the name and permeating through the rest of our work, is formed around a focus on queerness,” Ab and Al said on Queer Candle Co. “We are proud to hire other queer folks and to make an effort to build community with and elevate other LGBTQ+ businesses.”
Browsing the site, you’ll find a variety of soy candles that feature scents like lavender, jasmine, grapefruit, lemon, rose and more, and most of the candles come topped with a visual representation of the scent, including herbs, dehydrated fruits or salt rocks.
