Who Is the Queen’s Youngest Granddaughter, Lady Louise Windsor?

Today, Queen Elizabeth’s youngest granddaughter, Lady Louise Windsor, is celebrating her sweet 16 birthday.

While we can name just about every fact about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three children—Prince George (6), Princess Charlotte (4) and Prince Louis (1)—the same can’t be said for the royal teenager…until now.

From her relationship with the queen to her location in the line of succession, here’s everything you need to know about Lady Louise Windsor.

1. How is she related to the royal family?

Lady Louise Windsor is the oldest daughter of Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward, who is the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

2. Where does she stand in the line of succession?

As the queen’s youngest granddaughter, Louise is 13th in line to the British throne. She stands behind Prince Charles and Prince William, followed by his three children with Middleton, Prince Harry, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

3. How is her health?

Louise was born prematurely in 2003 and suffered from a condition called esotropia, which causes the eyes to turn outwards. Following several operations, Louise was given a clean bill of health.

In 2015, her mom sat down for an interview with The Sunday Express and explained the circumstances. “Premature babies can often have squints because the eyes are the last thing in the baby package to really be finalized,” she said. “Her squint was quite profound when she was tiny, and it takes time to correct it.”

4. How is her relationship with the queen?

As normal as you’d expect. Back in 2016, Sophie, Countess of Wessex revealed that it took some time for Louise to realize that not everyone has a queen for a grandmother.

“For Louise, actually, it was much more of a shock to the system. It was only when she was coming home from school and saying, ‘Mummy, people keep on telling me that grandma is the queen,’” Sophie told BBC. “I don’t think she had grasped that perhaps there was only one queen.”

5. What does she do for fun?

Similar to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Lady Louise thoroughly enjoys equestrian activities. Not only does she regularly go horseback riding with her grandparents, but she’s also competed as a carriage driver in the British Driving Society Championship for Young Drivers.
