The Queen Shared a Rare Photo of Herself and Prince Philip from Her Private Collection on Instagram

Queen Elizabeth II is honoring the memory of her late husband, Prince Philip.

On Friday evening, ahead of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral service, the official royal family Instagram account shared a sweet photo of the Queen and Prince Philip from the monarch's private collection.

In the caption, the Palace wrote of the photo:

"The Queen wishes to share this private photograph taken with The Duke of Edinburgh at the top of the Coyles of Muick, Scotland in 2003.

Her Majesty and the Royal Family are grateful for all the messages of condolence from around the world and have been touched to see and hear so many people sharing fond memories of The Duke, in celebration of his life."

Today, the Queen will lay her husband of 73 years to rest and honor his life and decades of service to the Commonwealth in a small, private service at St. George's Chapel in Windsor. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the funeral is limited to 30 guests, which will include Philip's children and grandchildren and many of their spouses (although Prince Harry did fly from his new home in California to attend the service, his pregnant wife, Meghan Markle, was advised by her doctors not to travel).

Earlier this week, Buckingham Palace released the full guest list for the funeral, which includes:

  • The Queen

  • Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall

  • Princess Anne and Sir Tim Laurence

  • Prince Andrew

  • Prince Edward, the Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise and Viscount Severn
