Queen Elizabeth II has been seen using a walking stick for the first time in 20 years. The British monarch, 95, was last seen using a walking aid in 2003 and 2004, after she had an operation to remove torn cartilage from her right knee.
On Tuesday, October 12, the Queen was seen attending a special service marking the centenary of the Royal British Legion at Westminster Abbey in London. The 95-year-old monarch was photographed while at the service, and could be seen using the stick to aid her walking.
She was given the stick when she stepped out of her royal vehicle, before making her way inside the abbey, walking steadily with her aid across the cobbled floor. She walked freely and confidently, with the stick providing her with a safety net as she made her way from her state limo to the event.
Fans of the Queen and the Royal family were surprised and concerned when they saw the photographs emerge online. Many took to social media worrying about the Queen's health, while some praised her for using a stick.
One said, "At 95 I'm surprised we haven't seen the Queen using a stick before. I applaud the use of it today."
Other fans were quick to squash any worrying discourse. Another shared, "The fact that The Queen is using a stick walking is not shocking. She's 95 years old."
The reason for the Queen using an aid is thought to be just for comfort. However, this isn't the first time that adjustments have been made for the Queen's ease and comfort. Back in 2016 she used a lift rather than the 26-step royal staircase when she arrived at parliament for the state opening.
The Queen hasn't worn the heavy Imperial State Crown since 2016 either, and it is instead placed upon a velvet cushion during ceremonies and events.
