Queen Maxima of the Netherlands Brought Her Hat Game at This Morning's State Opening of Parliament
The Brits aren't the only royals who make balcony appearances. This morning, the Dutch royal family waved to the crowds below at the Noordeinde Palace in The Haugue in honor of Prinsjesdag or "Prince's Day," a traditional celebration to mark the opening of Parliament in the Netherlands.
Held every year on the third Tuesday in September, Prinsjesdag is full of pomp and ceremony, including a royal procession by the monarch in a golden coach. King Willem-Alexander also greeted members of the Senate and the House of Representatives and delivered the annual "Speech from the Throne" in the Ridderzaal or Hall of Knights on behalf of the Dutch government.
In his remarks, King Willem-Alexander included a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Netherlands' liberation from Nazi Germany, a call for initiatives to help the lonely and the elderly, and a discussion about how a favorable economy can lead to better support programs for working parents and those with disabilities.
He also mentioned that climate change was a key concern and reflected on "a Brexit outcome that is still uncertain." And he finished by saying, "In discharging your duties, you may feel supported in the knowledge that many are wishing you wisdom and join me in praying for strength and God’s blessing upon you."
Queen Maxima wore a pastel blue dress and a striking beige hat adorned with a pink flower for the day of events, and Maxima's brother- and sister in law Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien joined them up on the balcony to mark the occasion.
