For years, I've envied outfits worn by Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, and have learned a bunch of fashion tricks by revisiting Princess Diana's '90s looks. Recently, however, there's been another British royal whose style I can't stop thinking about: Queen Elizabeth II.
Sure, I've always admired her ability to match her coats with her hats, and I've even daydreamed about that extravagant tiara collection (she tends to loan out the pieces those in her family). But once I saw photos of Queen Elizabeth vacationing at the Balmoral Estate at Glen Muick this summer, I realized her casual outfits cannot be overlooked. The vests, the scarves, the versatile footwear — it's all stuff that I, personally, want in my closet right now. And for fall 2020, I might just be taking a few tips from Her Majesty herself.
Since the Queen is someone who enjoys a go-to uniform, there are plenty of recent photos of her dressed down, showing off ensembles that, honestly, are extremely cottagecore. I've rounded up a handful that I can't wait to copy, right down to her favorite black wellies.
Invest in a Vest

Perhaps it's partially due to my love of the shest trend, but I feel compelled to buy a blue puffer vest after seeing it on the Queen. It's the perfect fall layer, and once winter rolls around, you can sneak it under your coat for even more warmth. There's a similar style from Ralph Lauren ($130; nordstrom.com) in my cart as we speak.
Bring Back Plaid Midi Skirts

It's preppy and professional, but honestly, the plaid midi skirt is a great throw-on-and-go piece for the fall. With a simple T-shirt or a snuggly knit, along with some loafers or booties, you suddenly have a full, fashion-forward outfit. And, you can wear it with your vest!
Embrace Vibrant Colors

The Queen is someone who fully embraces bright colors — even on days when she chooses to dress down. While fall makes me want to reach for sleek black, shades of grey, and neutrals, this look reminds me to add in purples and yellows, too, to balance it out. Plus, all the fashion pros love color blocking.

You don't have to wear it like a kerchief, but a silk printed option does add another eye-catching element to your outerwear look. And should you go with a longer style, there are plenty of creative ways to tie it.
Don't Forget Some Sunglasses

Sunglasses are often associated with summer, but that fall glare is pretty bright, too. The Queen's preferred shades are more of a retro style, but with so many celebrity collaborations out now — from Ashley Benson and Matt Bomer for Privé Revaux to Lizzo for Quay to Dan Levy's DL Eyewear — there are tons of (affordable!) options to choose from.
Remember Your Trench

This is one jacket style that can be worn in almost any season, and also works for countless occasions, from fancy events to rainy days — especially when paired with practical Wellington boots (Shop Similar: $150; nordstrom.com).
