Queen Elizabeth Reportedly Wasn't Happy With This Scene in Season 2 of The Crown

Despite its soaring popularity, The Crown isn’t the easiest of watches. Netflix’s megapopular show, which chronicles the ascension and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, is chock-full of heartbreak, malaise, tragedy, and betrayal. But the show has been especially pernicious for the queen herself. Despite earlier reports that she is in fact a fan of the show, Express is now reporting that she may not be as thrilled about The Crown's portrayal of her life and family as previously thought.

According to the report, the queen was particularly perturbed by episode 9 of season 2, which depicts a young Prince Charles’s fraught time at boarding school. In the episode, there’s a moment in which Charles’ father, Prince Philip, tells his son that he’s “bloody weak” for not standing up to bullies at Gordonstoun, the same school that Philip attended as a youth. But according to a palace insider, things didn’t exactly play out that way in real life.

"The queen realizes that many who watch The Crown take it as an accurate portrayal of the royal family and she cannot change that," the insider said. "But I can convey that she was upset by the way Prince Philip is depicted as being a father insensitive to his son’s well-being. She was particularly annoyed at a scene in which Philip has no sympathy for a plainly upset Charles while he is flying him home from Scotland. That simply did not happen.”

Ever since The Crown premiered in 2016, its accuracy has been debated in all corners of the Internet. And while it is clearly based on true events, it’s also a TV show, which means the creators have definitely taken some liberties when it comes to specific dialogue.

Hopefully this one indiscretion won’t prevent the queen from bingeing season 3, because with Olivia Coleman on board as Queen Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter signed on to play Princess Margaret, it’s sure to be an absolute banger.
