Bridgerton season 2 was everything fans wanted and more, thanks to the brilliant chemistry between Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, and all the hidden meanings in each scene. Viewers were also obsessed with a truly iconic character: Queen Charlotte.

Which might be why Netflix have just announced a prequel focussing on her origins, called Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, explaining exactly she came to be the kingpin of Regency society. YES. What is Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story's expected release date?

Sadly there's no news on when the Queen Charlotte spin-off will be released, but the good news is we now know filming has officially wrapped. In August 2022, five months after the prequel was announced, director Tom Verica wrote on Twitter, "That's a wrap. This production, this cast, this crew…just wait."

What this means for a UK release date is unclear, but fans are hoping it could be on screens in spring 2023, making it the perfect filler while we wait for Bridgerton season 3.

Who will star in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story?

"Introducing Corey Mylchreest as King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," the official Netflix account revealed on 7th February 2023. King George is Charlotte's husband, who isn't around in the Bridgerton series due to ill health.

On 8th July 2022, Deadline revealed the prequel had found its young Violet Ledger: Connie Jenkins-Greig. The actor will feature as the recurring character, played by Ruth Gemmell in Bridgerton, who is apparently the "kind and inquisitive" teenager of parents Vivian and Lord Ledger, who will be played by The Wheel Of Time's Katie Brayben (The Wheel of Time) and Death In Paradise's Keir Charles.

When the prequel was announced, it was revealed Golda Rosheuvel will be reprising her role of Queen Charlotte, and West End performer India Amarteifio will play her younger self. Netflix also confirmed some other fan favourites will play a part.

"Additionally, Lady Danbury @andoh_adjoa and Arsema Thomas as her younger self will also be participating in the social season, alongside none other than Ruth Gemmell as Lady Bridgerton and Corey Mylchreest as a young King George," they added. YES.

Others include Michelle Fairley as Princess Augusta, Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, and Arsema Thomas as Young Agatha Danbury. The cast also includes Sam Clemmett as Young Brimsley, Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute, Tunji Kasim as Adolphus, Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor, Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury, and Hugh Sachs as Brimsley.

We have no doubt there will be some other new faces (and maybe some familiar ones) and we can't wait for them to be uncovered.

When was the Bridgerton prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story announced?

On 30th March, the official Bridgerton Twitter account shared the happy news that Shonda Rhimes, the producer behind the hugely successful Netflix original, is turning her attention to a spin-off.

The announcement read, "All hail Queen Charlotte! For her next series, Lady @ShondaRhimes will chronicle Her Majesty's rise to prominence and esteemed power in a prequel that shall witness Golda Rosheuvel reprise her role and India Amarteifio join the Ton as young Queen Charlotte."

What will the Bridgerton prequel be about?

The official synopsis from Netflix gives a little bit more detail, explaining the series will be "centered on Queen Charlotte's rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen's marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton."

A statement obtained Variety in July 2022 also revealed producer Shonda Rhimes would be writing the prequel alongside original Bridgerton author Julia Quinn. As Rhimes explained, "Queen Charlotte has been such a moving character to write and now having the opportunity to work with Julia to adapt this story into a book is such an exciting opportunity."
