Purdue opens stadium gate named for Tyler Trent for the first time

The Tyler Trent Student Gate at Purdue is officially open for business.

Purdue hosted Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon for its first home game of the season. And it was the first time that students entered Ross-Ade Stadium through the gate named for Trent, the Purdue superfan.

A Purdue student, Trent, 20, died of cancer on Jan. 1 just days after the Boilermakers’ Music City Bowl loss to Auburn. Trent was a captain for that game after his courageous attitude throughout his terminal cancer fight captivated the Purdue football team and college football fans across the country.

Purdue announced that the student gate would be renamed for Trent in March.

“We hope this will be an appropriate way for generations of fans — and non-fans for that matter — to be reminded of what Tyler stood for, personified; characteristics that we want every Boilermaker, in some measure, to embody,” Purdue president Mitch Daniels said during the spring dedication.
