Are Publix, Trader Joe's, And Other Grocery Stores Closing For Hurricane Ian?

As Florida residents prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Ian this week, many have likely stocked up on water, canned goods, and other necessary groceries. But if you haven't picked up what you need, what grocery stores will be open for you? Lots of businesses, like supermarkets and restaurants, have already closed their doors in preparation for the storm—even Waffle House has closed its doors. If you're considering heading out to your local grocery store to pick up these essentials, these are the closures and modified hours you should keep in mind for some of the state's most popular grocery stores.

Is Publix closed for Hurricane Ian?

Publix, one of the most popular grocery stores in the state, has shared the link to a website customers can visit to check on the status of their local Publix. As of Wednesday, September 28, a total of 531 of their Florida grocery stores have modified hours. Publix did not share the modified hours for each location, but did provide a phone number customers can call. Some stores—those in the direct path of Hurricane Ian—have already closed, Fox 13 reports.

As far as after the storm, a Publix spokesperson did confirm with the Miami Herald that most of their stores do have generators.

“We do have generators at nearly all of our Florida locations if a store should lose power. And, at locations where we don’t have permanent generators, we have the ability to bring mobile generators in,” the spokesperson said.

Is Trader Joe's closed for Hurricane Ian?

Some Trader Joe's locations, including ones in Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, and Naples, have already closed their doors and plan to stay closed until at least Thursday of this week. TJ's customers can visit the Trader Joe's page for their local store to check on closures in their city.

Is Walmart closed for Hurricane Ian?

Walmart has also provided its customers with a real-time closure map. As of Wednesday, 220 Walmart locations have been listed as closed. There is a small handful of stores outside of Florida that are on the map for closures not related to Hurricane Ian.

Is Disney World closed for Hurricane Ian?

Unfortunately for those who had plans on visiting Disney World this week, the theme park will be closed on both Wednesday and Thursday. In addition to Magic Kingdom Park, other parks closing on those two days are:

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios

  • Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park (Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park is currently closed for the season.)

  • Winter Summerland Miniature Golf

  • Fantasia Gardens

  • Fairways Miniature Golf

Universal Studios is also closing all of its theme parks on Wednesday and Thursday.
