  • The home-reno twins advise homebuyers to be careful of "as-is" real estate listings.

  • "As-is" properties will not be repaired by the seller nor receive funds to hire a handyman. The home shown is exactly what buyers will get if you purchase it.

Watching an episode of The Property Brothers lets HGTV viewers into the world of real-estate-slash-home-reno, but in order to get to the exciting reveal, a new home has to be bought first, and that comes with its own challenges.

In the latest episode of Property Brothers, titled “Hometown Vegas,” Jonathan and Drew Scott help Nevada natives Lauren and Jeremy find a home for their growing family, which includes a toddler and a baby. With a total budget of $800,000, the couple purchases a home in an ideal neighborhood for $620,000 and although there’s money to spare, every penny becomes necessary for the renovations later on.

The home chosen was an “as-is” property—a.k.a., a home for which the seller will not do or pay for any repairs. The twins share that these are two words homebuyers must be wary of because although the home itself could be a good deal, in the long-run the renovation process will cost more overall, and potentially cause a project to go over budget.

While touring the home, the Scott brothers saw the work needed throughout, not to mention, the hidden issues. And sure enough there were plumbing issues, subfloor problems, and even patio repairs, but in the end, the HGTV stars delivered. Lauren and Jeremy eventually fell in love with the look of their modern, sleek home that was also kid-friendly.
