Principal Sacrifices Herself to Save Kids in Bus Crash
After more than two decades as the principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School in Indiana, Susan Jordan knew she was appreciated. In an 11-minute video posted to YouTube last May, staff and students at the school describe Jordan as a kind, dedicated educator.
“She is everything I want to be when I grow up,” says one adult, per CNN. “She’s caring. She’s compassionate. She’s loving. She’s sincere, and she’s a professional. She makes all of us want to be even better."
Jordan’s character was on display even with her last breath. Jordan, who was killed when a bus jumped a curb outside the school on Tuesday, died protecting her students, the bus driver says.
Rita Reith isn’t sure why her bus lurched forward—an inspection four days ago found no issues, per WISH TV—but she says she saw Jordan push several students out of harm’s way; two 10-year-olds were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Up to the minute she was alive, she was helping the kids,” Reith says. “They just loved her.” “That’s just the type of person she was,” a Lawrence Township superintendent adds. “She was here every day, never missed a day of work—just a phenomenal individual that truly cared about children.” “We love you Mrs. Jordan!” her students say at the end of the YouTube video. “Thank you for the many years of leadership!”
