The Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Letizia Both Work the Skirt Suit Silhouette
Hillary Clinton is the empress of pantsuits, but foreign royals rule the skirt suit realm.
On Tuesday, Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Letizia of Spain attended separate events in different countries wearing very similar styles.
Kate, who is on her first official trip alone, to the Netherlands (she was supposed to visit Malta in 2014 but had to cancel owing to extreme morning sickness while pregnant with Princess Charlotte), stepped out in a light blue ensemble from Catherine Walker & Co. While meeting with King Willem-Alexander, she opted for a sophisticated pencil skirt that hit right above her knee. She paired it with a blazer with a Peter Pan collar, oversize buttons, and a belt around the waist. She wore nude heels and carried a matching clutch.
Meanwhile, Queen Letizia attended a seminar at the Casa de América in Madrid wearing a strikingly similar outfit to Kate’s. Arguably a bit more fashion-forward,the queen’s Felipe Varela white set included a bouclé skirt with a jacket in the same material featuring military-inspired details such as wide lapels and flap pockets. As with Kate, Queen Letizia’s coat also added shape, thanks to a waist-cinching belt.
Both women managed to take a silhouette generally reserved for the office and make it work for their respective royal engagements. Maybe Clinton should take notes.
