Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have announced the name of their baby boy.

Eugenie and Brooksbank welcomed their first son on 9 February, sharing the news with followers on social media and through Buckingham Palace.

Now they have announced their son’s name - August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

In a post on Instagram, Eugenie wrote: "We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

"Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can't express. We are excited to be able to share these photos with you."

She added that the photos had been taken by their midwife, and said: "Thank you to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy."

She also revealed where the names came from, confirming that Philip is in tribute to her grandfather, Prince Philip, who is still in hospital having been taken in under precaution.

Writing on her stories, she said: "On his grandfather’s birthday weekend, thinking of my grandfather, we are introducing our little boy. He is named after his great grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers."

Augustus was the middle name of her great-great-great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert.

Hawke was the middle name of Brooksbank's great-great-great-great-grandfather, Rev Edward Hawke Brooksbank.

Eugenie's father, and August's grandfather, Prince Andrew, turned 61 on Friday.

Her mother, Sarah Ferguson, also made her first statement about her grandson since his birth.

Posting on Twitter she said: "As Grandparents, the Duke and I are thrilled and blessed at the arrival of our grandson August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

"He is a beautiful blessing and a bringer of such love and joy to all our Family. I am so proud of Jack and Eugenie, they are and will be wonderful parents"

Sharing the same photo, the Royal Family account posted: "The couple have been touched by the well wishes they have received on the birth of their first child, and are delighted to share this first photo as a family."

August is the Queen's ninth great-grandchild.

The name will come as a surprise to many punters, with bookies suggesting more traditional options as favourites.

However, the princess's son is very unlikely to ever be king, and as she does not carry out royal duties, probably won't be a working royal either, so the couple had more freedom in choosing his name.

Bookies had odds of 4/1 on Arthur for the boy’s name, followed by 6/1 for James and 8/1 for Frederick.

Andrew, after Eugenie’s father, was down at 25/1.

Eugenie and Jack were pictured leaving Portland Hospital, where she was delivered of their son, on Friday, three days after she gave birth.

Eugenie is the second daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

Andrew and Ferguson have been divorced for more than 20 years, but live together at the moment at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Andrew, 61, stepped back from royal duties in November 2019 after a disastrous interview on BBC Newsnight where he said he did not regret his friendship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The family is close knit.

Eugenie and Brooksbank married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in October 2018. He is a European brand director for Casamigos Tequila, while she works in the art world.

She does not carry out royal duties and does not receive any money from the taxpayer.

She does have links with several charities as a royal patron, and has accompanied her grandmother at events like the Maundy Thursday service in Windsor.

Brooksbank, 34, is the eldest son of George and Nicola Brooksbank.

He was not given a title on marriage to the princess, following a trend where male ‘commoners’ are not granted peerages on marrying into the Royal Family.

It is more common for a duchy or title to be bestowed onto a male member of the Royal Family and their wife, who marries in.

The newest royal will not have a title, but will be 11th in line to the throne - for now.

The announcement of a second baby for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle means Eugenie's son will be bumped to 12th place when he or she arrives.

But August's arrival had bumped dozens of people below him down a place too, including his great-aunt Princess Anne and her children and grandchildren.

It also affects some other senior royals, like the Queen’s cousins.
