Charles Spencer is weighing in on the latest royal drama.

In a new interview with the BBC, the younger brother of the late Princess Diana gave his candid opinion on the controversy surrounding Kate, the current Princess of Wales who is under fire for digitally altering a family photo that Kensington Palace released earlier this month amid her low-key recovery from a “planned abdominal surgery” in January.

“I do worry about what happened to the truth,” he said of the volume of conspiracy theories about Kate, who the palace previously said would not return to public duties until after March.

Speculation over the princess’s whereabouts was only exacerbated when major photo agencies retracted the photo last week, leading the palace to issue a rare apology attributed to the Princess of Wales, who confessed to editing the picture.

When asked how the current media storm Kate is facing compares to the press’s treatment of Diana decades ago, Earl Spencer said, “I think it was more dangerous back in the day. If I look back to ’97 and Diana’s death, I think that was so shocking—the circumstances of her death were so shocking that it did make the industry that supports the paparazzi really consider more carefully what it could and couldn’t do.”

He added, “Not because they had a moral judgment, but because it was unacceptable.”

Kate was last publicly seen on December 25, when she joined the royal family for the traditional walk to Christmas morning church service in Sandringham. Weeks later, the palace announced that she had been hospitalized for an unspecified abdominal surgery, with the recuperation period purportedly lasting until after Easter, which falls on March 31 this year.

Despite concern over the princess’s absence from the public eye, a source told Bazaar last week that she is “doing well, all things considered.”

A royal insider added, “[This situation] has caused some stress for the princess, but she tends not to pay attention to online chatter or even the press. I think people forget that this was simply a mother wanting her family to look their best in a photograph that was going to be heavily scrutinized. She was protecting her children.”
