Princess Diana's Close Friend Elton John Attends Her Son Prince Harry's Wedding

Elton John’s relationship with the royal family is still going strong, decades after his friend Princess Diana’s death. The singer was in attendance at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding on May 19.

According to Entertainment Tonight, John is expected to perform at the couple's reception, where things should be a little less formal, and a little more fun. "He plans to sing and there's also been talk of some type of tribute to Diana, one in which Elton will speak at the wedding and say how much she is missed on this very special day," the source told ET. "[Elton] has remained very close to her sons."

The move is particularly meaningful for Harry, as John was great friends with his late mother Princess Diana. Both were passionate advocates of AIDS research as well. “She was very much loved,” John said of Diana during an interview with ITV’s Lorraine. “She was a controversial figure in some respects, but not to me. I loved her because she did so much for AIDS and she was a great friend to me.”

John performed at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997, singing “Candle in the Wind” and changing the lyrics to be about the late princess.

Since then, he continued to have a bond with Diana’s children, William and Harry. He attended Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011, and in 2017 he spent time with the royal family in Sicily, where Prince Harry opened up about his romance with Markle to the singer.

“I could tell that he was totally in love,” John said about Harry. “He didn’t really discuss much personally, but he said ‘I’m in love,’ and I thought, good for you.”
