Prince William on the sweet way Princess Charlotte is following in Prince George's footsteps
Picture this: You've just sat down to watch the football World Cup, but instead of seeing Jack Grealish and co. on the pitch, it's Prince Harry and Kate Middleton making their way to the goalpost. Whilst this scenario seems like the stuff of a fever dream, seeing the Royal Family having a kick-about might not be too farfetched after all, as Prince William revealed that one royal is destined to be a "budding star for the future".
During a visit to meet the England Women's team at St George's Park – where he was gifted with three football shirts with his children's names on – Prince William let slip how much of a superstar Princess Charlotte is on the pitch. As he was handed his daughter's custom-made football shirt, the future King let out a giggle and said: "Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she is really good at goal. She said 'Please tell them that'."
He went on, "She's a budding star for the future!"
Princess Charlotte's love of football means she's following in the footsteps of her older brother, Prince George. In fact, just a few years ago Prince William raved about his son's skills on the pitch, telling football legend Peter Crouch that Prince George could be an "all time goalscorer."
And Prince George himself has made no secret of his obsession with the sport, joining his parents to watch the final game of Euro 2020 (which took place last year due to COVID). In fact, George was keen to show his support for the England football team by donning one of their shirts, although Kate wasn't too keen on the idea.
"Yesterday I had an afternoon tea with The Duchess and it was very much a discussion whether George will be allowed to wear the jersey tonight at Wembley or not," tennis player Marion Bartoli told BBC Radio 5. "William was for it, Kate not so keen, so we'll see."
But the decision to let George wear a shirt has a deeper meaning than what you might expect, as royal expert Duncan Larcombe explained to OK!. "That really struck me after seeing George in his first grown-up suit with his parents at the Euros final in July," recalled Larcombe.
"People were asking why they hadn’t let him wear an England shirt 'like a normal eight-year-old'. William was apparently keen on the idea, but it was Kate, the former commoner, who said no," the expert added. "She was showing George that being 'on duty' requires a different approach… he has to learn to don the royal armour."
