Prince William and Kate Walking Behind King Charles at the Coronation Had a Special Meaning
King Charles III's coronation is officially here, and everyone is here to witness him become the next ruler of England. Among the many time-honored traditions the ceremony had in place, there was a royal procession that sees him as he enters Westminster Abbey to take his place on the royal throne.
Before Charles walked into the holy church, viewers witnessed a number of other royal family members enter Westminster Abbey, like his youngest son Prince Harry. He walked in with his cousin Princess Beatrice and her husband Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi, just after her sister Princess Eugenie came in with her husband Jack Brooksbank. Watchers also saw Charles' siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward make their way into the ceremony.
But as other well-known officials walked in, folks wanted to know where Prince William and Kate Middleton stood amid the royal procession. Turns out, the couple held a special place in the lineup, right behind the new monarch of England. What's more, there is a specific reason why the couple was given this position during the historic moment.
While Buckingham Palace hasn't officially released a statement about where William and Kate stood in the royal procession, the couple most likely walked behind Charles due to the prince of Wales' pivotal role he plays in the ceremony.
According to the Church of England's liturgy of coronation service, William's position in the coronation was an important one. As part of the ceremony, he kneeled in front of his father at Westminster Abbey and "pledged his loyalty and allegiance to the King." This is due to his title as the prince of Wales and becoming the new heir to the throne, with Prince George following him as second in line.
Because of William and Kate's place in the royal family, where they stood in the procession also applied to their children. Their daughter Princess Charlotte and youngest son Prince Louis came in behind them, as well as sat beside them during the service. As for the couple's oldest son Prince George held his own special place. He walked in behind his grandfather, as he held the title of page of honor and became the youngest future monarch ever to participate in a coronation.
